Poor Porcupine Lost Its Shine - a Poem
Please Share the Road
A poem tribute to porcupines and many other lovely creatures dying on the roads and highways.
Stout Canadian I am, I care for my mate
I offer her my strength, my love for her sake.
We can't wait to make love on a cool October night
In the gay rustle of sienna leaves will be lit by moonlight.
Slow-moving, slow I am; I move slow, yes I do
But I built my wife a den for more than two.
I am a proud Canadian and eh, a very proud husband too
For the love of my life will conceive me a few.
My wife and I share a fruitful great appetite
Though I teach her ‘bout the bark Sugar Maple diet.
One dusk she begged, “dear husband, find me a fruit.”
“I don’t want any Sugar Maple, leaves or root.”
If you remember like the husband who dearly loved his wife
Clambered down over the wall, endangering his life;
For that fresh rampion she longed in the other side
“Please husband, if I can’t have it I’ll die,” she cried.
I’ll live my life in guilt if the fruit I cannot find
My love’s life depends on this, she has pined.
I shall cross over the road in the quietness of the night
Nocturnal I am; I’ll brave the line in the absence of light.
I found the fruit of life; I proudly will carry it home
Into my soulmate’s heart, she’ll thank me a poem.
But in sudden fate, quick as a flash of lightning
I lost my sight from the lights so blinding.
30,000 beautiful quills lay weak, soon be done
No pin is poison; I don’t intend to hurt anyone.
T’was on a Wednesday, the 26th of September
I lay cold on the lonely road, struck hard I remember.
“Stranger, I forgive you; please, to my wife deliver the fruit
It will give her my love in this unfortunate pursuit.”
My chest is tightening, scared for my life
She’ll be up a tree looking where I’d be, oh dear wife.
My teeth chattering of the shivers down my spine
My heartbeat is fading, I’ll be a dead porcupine.
I’ll miss my mate so; our young will have no father
But my soul, my spirit will be with them forever.

What others think about porcupine roadkill.
- Roadkill Porcupine
I always say a silent prayer for dead animals that I bike past. I think about their untimely death and wish their spirit to be at peace.
